How to find your CPV codes

  1. Describe what you sell. Use everyday words, such as office cleaning or IT support. The finder also knows common terms that the vocabulary words differently, such as HR, CCTV and grass cutting.
  2. Compare the families. Results are grouped by division, so cleaning services, cleaning products and cleaning machines stay apart. Select a code to see where it sits and the codes beneath it.
  3. Tick every code that fits. Buyers choose the codes for each contract, and they do not always choose the most precise one. Tick the precise codes for your work and the broader codes above them.
  4. Copy your list. Paste the codes into the search or alert settings of a tender portal, download them as a spreadsheet, or share a link with your team.

How a CPV code is built

  2. 45200000-9GroupWorks for complete or part construction and civil engineering work

The first two digits name the division, the first three the group, the first four the class and the first five the category. Each of the last three digits adds precision within the category, and zeros only fill a code out to eight digits.

The digit after the dash is a check digit, set for each code to verify the eight digits before it. Some portals, including Find a Tender, show codes without it.

Divisions 03 to 44 and 48 are for supplies, division 45 is for works, and divisions 50 to 98 are for services.

Checking the codes in a tender notice

Paste a notice, a specification or a list of codes into the finder. It picks out every eight-digit code, with or without its check digit, and names each one.

A check digit that does not match the official code is pointed out, with the right one. A number that is not a CPV code is marked, with the nearest code above it. Add all to your list keeps the codes a buyer used, so you can search for similar contracts.

Questions about CPV codes

What is a CPV code?

CPV stands for Common Procurement Vocabulary. A CPV code is a number that describes what a public contract is for, so buyers and suppliers use the same terms for the same work. Each code has eight digits, a dash and a check digit, such as 90910000-9 for cleaning services.

Are CPV codes still used in the UK?

Yes. Under the Procurement Act 2023, a tender notice gives the relevant CPV codes for the contract, and Find a Tender lets you search for notices and save searches by CPV code. Public Contracts Scotland, Sell2Wales and eTendersNI also use CPV codes for supplier alerts.

How many codes should I choose?

There is no set number. Choose every code that describes work you would bid for, plus the broader codes above them, then remove any that bring notices you never want.

What is the number after the dash?

A check digit. The regulation sets one for each code to verify the eight digits before it. The finder looks each one up, so it can tell you when a code was copied with the wrong check digit.

Where do the codes come from?

All 9,454 main codes, with their check digits and English descriptions, come from Annex I of Commission Regulation (EC) No 213/2008, as published on legislation.gov.uk. CPV © European Union, reused under Commission Decision 2011/833/EU. The finder does not include the supplementary vocabulary, the letter codes such as AA01-1 that describe extra details of a purchase.

Why can I not find a code for my service?

The vocabulary dates from 2008, so some newer services, such as cloud hosting, have no code of their own. Search for an older term that covers the work, such as data storage or software, and add the broader code above it.

Is the finder free?

Yes. It needs no account and no sign-in.

Is my list private?

Yes. The finder runs in this browser, and nothing you type in the search box is sent to Bidsights or anyone else. Your list is saved on this device until you clear it or your browsing data. Opening a code puts it in the page address so you can bookmark it, and a shared link carries its list's codes.

Finding the tender is the start

Codes help you find the right tenders. Bidsights is a CRM for bid management, for the work that follows. It keeps each bid with its customer, bid/no-bid decision and tender pack, which you can review with Bidsights AI, plus tasks with owners and due dates, and the contract that follows a win.
